Baltimore, MD -This weekend, in celebration of Juneteenth, Baltimore Main Streets will highlight several Black owned businesses within their programs for a Black Business Crawl on June 19-20, 2021. The event visits the Baltimore Main Street programs of Pigtown, Federal Hill, Fells Point, Waverly, Hamilton-Lauraville , Highlandtown, Belair-Edison and its host program Pennsylvania Avenue from 4-7PM each day.
Juneteenth commemorates the day that the slaves in Texas learned that they were free. Although the real end of slavery came with the passing of the 13th Amendment by Congress on January 31, 1865, it took nearly two years for the last slaves in Texas to learn of their freedom. “Juneteenth is an important day in Black history. We have so many great Black-owned businesses throughout the city and within the Baltimore Main Street program, it only made sense to try to coordinate an event for Juneteenth to showcase them” said Nakeisha Turner, manager of the Pennsylvania Avenue Main Street program.
After presenting the idea to her main street partners, they all jumped on board to support the efforts to highlight the quality and of the Black-owned businesses within the 8 Baltimore Main Street Programs. The Juneteenth Black Business Crawl for Baltimore Main Streets will allow attendees to visit the different main street corridors on a self-guided tour to visit and patronize the participating Black businesses. Each corridor has coordinated with its businesses to offer something different to bring the Black-owned businesses together to celebrate their unique products and services.
